Confirm what you are obtaining

Read the system requirements and supported processor architecture before downloading. A file intended for another operating system will not become compatible by changing its extension. Check whether you need a free viewer, a trial or a licensed editor; similar product names can represent different capabilities.

On a work computer, use the approved software catalogue or ask the responsible administrator. Installing a personal copy can create licensing, support and data-handling problems even when the application itself is legitimate. Do not work around an organisational installation block as a routine troubleshooting step.

Read the installation choices

Close work that could be affected, then inspect the installer prompts. Decline unrelated optional additions that you do not need. Check proposed changes to default applications or browser settings. If the operating system raises a warning about an unknown or blocked application, investigate the publisher and documented installation procedure rather than automatically bypassing the protection.

Keep the download source and licence details with your records. Avoid storing licence keys in a publicly shared folder. After installation, launch the application and test it with an unimportant file. Confirm that it performs the required task before importing a large project or confidential material.

Plan its maintenance and removal

Find the supported update mechanism. An application installed from a store may update differently from a publisher-downloaded edition. Use the relevant official channel and do not respond to unrelated browser pop-ups claiming that a component is outdated.

If the application is unsuitable, remove it using the system's uninstall controls and check whether local project data needs to be retained first. Deleting its icon does not necessarily uninstall it. Keep only software you use and can maintain; a collection of abandoned utilities increases clutter and makes it harder to recognise unexpected activity later.
