Match direction and capability

A direct cable between compatible ports is usually easier to understand than several adapters. When conversion is necessary, read its direction. An adapter described for DisplayPort output to HDMI input may not work in reverse. Similar plugs do not mean a converter is bidirectional.

For USB-C, confirm that the host port provides the required video function and that the cable supports it. A cable suitable for charging may not carry the intended display signal. For any connector, check the documented resolution and refresh-rate combination rather than assuming every product of the same shape has equal capability.

Use the monitor and computer manuals to establish a supported target. A cable advertised with a high maximum figure cannot increase the computer's output capability. The dock's simultaneous-display limits may also be lower than the capability of an individual monitor input.

Fit the physical desk

Measure the route with enough slack for adjustment and a sit-stand desk's movement if applicable. Avoid tight bends at the connector and tension that pulls on the socket. An unnecessarily long cable adds bulk and can complicate signal reliability at demanding settings; choose a documented suitable length for the required mode.

Leave access to connectors so the setup can be tested without dismantling the desk. Label both ends if several similar cables run together. Do not cover a connector's latch or force a latching plug out without releasing it according to its design.

Verify after connection

Select the correct monitor input and check the operating system's display settings. Confirm the intended resolution and refresh rate are actually selected, then observe normal use and wake from sleep. A picture appearing at a lower setting does not prove the original target is supported.

Retain the packaging or specification record until the connection is verified. If there is flicker or intermittent loss, compare a known suitable cable with all other settings unchanged. This gives a meaningful result without turning the test into several simultaneous changes.
